Okonjima is a Herero name for place of frogs. Okonjima private nature reserve is situated about half way between Windhoek and Etosha National Park. Okonjima became a cattle farm as from 1920 and was bought by the Hansen family in 1970. They were well established Brahman breeders and continued to farm cattle. In 1986 they started hosting tourists until 1993 when the AfricCat Foundation was born. Due to the number of tourists interested in birds and carnivores, in 1994 Okonjima changed from being a guest farm to a lodge. Okonjima is a family run business, Wayne & Donna Hansen who own and live on the property bought the then cattle farm from their parents in 1993 and what used to be a cattle farm was turned into a 22, 000ha carnivore project.

The AfricCat Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving carnivores such as lions, hyenas, wild dogs, leopards and cheetahs. Since its inception in 1993 they have rescued and saved more than a thousand animals from irate farmers, out of which 86% have been released back into the wild. Those released are healthy enough to fend for themselves and those too injured continue to be housed.

The foundation also provides environmental educational programmes for the youth and farmers of Namibia by guiding them toward a greater understanding of the natural world and the importance of natural world.

AfriCat’s main focus and objects are:

  • Environmental Education and Awareness- Educating the next generation about carnivore conservation and its role in maintaining the balance of nature.
  • Farmer Predator Conflict Resolution- Creating awareness and promoting the tolerance of large carnivores among the farming community, by assisting in effective management and subsequent improved livestock protection.
  • Large Carnivore Research and Monitoring- Initiating and supporting much needed carnivore research.
  • Welfare and Rehabilitation- Providing humane housing, treatment and care for the orphaned and injured animals, as well as rescue, rehabilitation and release of large carnivores.

Okonjima is one of the most sought after destination on Namibia’s tourist route. The accommodation at Okonjima is excellent and suits all budgets with the lodge offering chalets, double rooms, luxury rooms and an exclusive campsite. With a variety of mammal species including big and small antelopes as well as an abundance of bird species, this fascinating reserve is a traveler’s paradise.

All camps and lodges have swimming pools and visitors are welcome to make use of these facilities at any time of the day or night. Photographers can also enjoy taking shots of the scenery and flora of this amazing place.
