- ABOUT US
Okonjima is a Herero name for place of frogs. Okonjima private nature reserve is situated about half way between Windhoek and Etosha National Park. Okonjima became a cattle farm as from 1920 and was bought by the Hansen family in 1970. They were well established Brahman breeders and continued to farm cattle. In 1986 they started hosting tourists until 1993 when the AfricCat Foundation was born. Due to the number of tourists interested in birds and carnivores, in 1994 Okonjima changed from being a guest farm to a lodge. Okonjima is a family run business, Wayne & Donna Hansen who own and live on the property bought the then cattle farm from their parents in 1993 and what used to be a cattle farm was turned into a 22, 000ha carnivore project.
The AfricCat Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving carnivores such as lions, hyenas, wild dogs, leopards and cheetahs. Since its inception in 1993 they have rescued and saved more than a thousand animals from irate farmers, out of which 86% have been released back into the wild. Those released are healthy enough to fend for themselves and those too injured continue to be housed.
The foundation also provides environmental educational programmes for the youth and farmers of Namibia by guiding them toward a greater understanding of the natural world and the importance of natural world.
