This 3 day/2 night safari into Sossusvlei is perfect for those that don’t want to camp. Departing from Swakopmund on Fridays, this 3 day tour spends the weekend in the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, before returning to Windhoek on Sundays. An action packed itinerary with stops at the Tropic of Capricorn, Big Daddy, Deadvlei, Sossusvlei, Dune 45, Sesriem Canyon, and the Solitaire Carnivore Conservation Centre whilst still finding some down time to relax by the pool. Accommodation is in twin share rooms with en-suite bathrooms and air-conditioning. 2 nights are spent at Desert Camp, just outside Sesriem, an incredible camp with stunning views over the desert and surround mountains. We spend a full day exploring the dunes, Deadvlei, Sossusvlei, Sesriem Canyon and climbing dunes including Dune 45 and Big Daddy for the brave. Our final day includes a delicious cooked breakfast before a 1hour cheetah experience at Solitaire, before arriving in Windhoek mid afternoon.
Day 1: Friday Desert Camp, Namib Desert
Departure is from Swakopmund at 12 noon and we will we drive through the Namib Desert via the Kuiseb Canyon and Solitaire and stopping en-route at the Tropic of Capricorn for a leg stretch. A light lunch will be provided which will be available in the vehicle and you can help yourself. We arrive at our camp late afternoon and have a chance to relax and enjoy the views before taking a short walk for sunset looking over the Naukluft mountain range. Overnight is based in twin rooms with en-suite bathroom facilities. Dinner is prepared by your guide over an open fire.
Day 2: Saturday Desert Camp, Namib Desert
Dawn departure from camp to arrive at the park gate for sunrise. We drive down an ancient river bed surrounded by towering dunes to the 2×4 parking (around 55kms) and take a 4×4 shuttle into the Sossusvlei area to appreciate the beauty of this place in early morning light and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the region. We explore this unique area on foot before heading into Dead Vlei with its large expanse of bleached cracked clay and skeletal camel thorn trees, contrasting with a backdrop of huge dunes with their ever-changing colours. We can either walk or take the 4×4 shuttle back to our vehicle. As we drive back to our accommodation we will stop at the famous Dune 45 and climb this dune if we wish or just wander around the base. We return to Sesriem and visit the nearby Sesriem Canyon, one of the few permanent water sources before arriving back at our lodge late afternoon to watch the sunset over this spectacular desert.
Day 3: Sunday Windhoek – End of Safari
Early morning breakfast before heading to Solitaire where we join a local guide to observe cheetahs currently in captivity with the hope to re-introduce them into a large reserve. We return to Windhoek via the Naukluft Mountains and Rehoboth. On arrival in Windhoek, mid afternoon, you will be dropped at your accommodation of choice.
For those flying out, a transfer can be arranged (at an additional cost) to the International Airport for your onward flight, or to the bus terminal for your overnight bus. For those flying today we do NOT recommend booking any flight departing prior to 17h00 in case there are unexpected delays returning from safari.
Word Of Mouth
I joined the 3-Day Sossusvlei Safari tour in mid-February and it was absolutely fantastic! It was difficult to find a group tour as many tour operators aren’t running group tours at the moment due to lack of tourists, but Chameleon is one of them!
We camped and woke up before sunrise for the hike up Dune 45 which was one of the many highlights of the trip. Other highlights were Sesriem Canyon (where were were able to swim), Deadvlei, Sossusvlei (at the time filled with water, also swimming), Solitaire – where they arranged for me to join a cheetah feeding (incredible!)
Our guide, Gideon, cooked some delicious meals and was a great guide. The memories will last a lifetime!
Great value for money, well organized, excellent driver/guide, unforgettable experience! The Sossusvlei/Deadvlei sight is ethereal, unbelievably breathtaking! And the rest of the desert is so grand and serene; the exotic, wild animals we encountered are an exciting bonus. I highly recommend this company and this tour. And our guide Tinashe, is one of the best you’ll ever get.
The tour of Sossusvlei and Swakopmund with Chameleon Safaris was truly the highlight of our trip to Namibia! Our guide Abraham was kind and knowledgeable and made everyone on the trip feel welcome. The tour takes in the beachside town of Swakopmund before heading inland past the Tropic of Capricorn to the dunes of Sossusvlei. The climb of the “Big Daddy” sand dune was challenging but well worth the effort! An amazing view from the top and a fun slide back down the massive dunes. Highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see a beautiful part of Namibia!
