Step away from the usual tourist routes and into the heart of everyday local Namibian life with This fascinating traditional cooking experience is in the informal settlement of Katutura township.

This 3-hour traditional cooking class takes you into the township, where you’ll learn to prepare local, authentic Namibian dishes over an open fire in a local family home, guided by a passionate traditional cuisine hobbyist and expert. where food is prepared the way it has been
for generations. Your adventure begins with a 30-minute drive from central Windhoek to the lively, informal settlement of Katutura.

Welcomed warmly by your host, you’ll step into a welcoming family home where cooking happens the authentic way. This is traditional home cooking in its truest form. You’ll prepare meals in an outdoor space, preparing your meal over an open fire using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, the traditional way. Roll up your sleeves and dive in: fetch water, help cut vegetables, pound millet with traditional tools, stir mahangu as it thickens over the flames, and learn the techniques that have nourished Namibian families for generations. You will gain hands-on insight into traditional techniques still used in homes today.

Throughout the experience, you’ll gain fascinating cultural insight into Namibia’s diverse ethnic groups, highlighting both the shared nature of dishes and the different names and preparation styles across cultures, such as Oshiwambo, Damara/Nama, Otjiherero, and other local
ethnic groups. This isn’t a polished kitchen with electric stoves and aprons. This is real, rustic, and wildly authentic. Expect smoke in your eyes, fire under your pot and a truly authentic atmosphere that reflects the real daily life of the local Namibian communities.

The experience concludes with enjoying the meal together, sharing conversation, stories, and cultural exchange in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Perfect for food lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and the genuinely curious, this experience offers far more than a cooking lesson.
